Last
Christmas my wife and I discovered that we
suffered from a deadly combination. On one hand
we were very giving and generous towards those
we love. But on the other hand, we were
extremely irresponsible with our finances. What
resulted was an eye opening Credit Card bill in
January. We both wondered who had stolen our
cards during the holiday season, but we were the
only ones to blame for the $8,000.00 credit card
debt that we had to somehow payoff. On top of
that our home equity debt was at its $35,000.00
limit so there would be no robbing of Peter to
Pay Paul. How could we have racked up over
$43,000.00 in debt in only 7 years of marriage?
Sinking, we decided to go through the Dave
Ramsey, Financial Peace material. We found this
curriculum to be extremely practical and
actually entertaining. We began to see how our
poor financial decisions were leading us into
bondage and without drastic measures we would
never realize the joy of consistent giving to
others. I was ashamed that we had never taken
the time to actually calculate how much was
going out versus what was coming in. My wife and
I were living on about 110% of our income. With
Dave's help, we have managed to eliminate our
credit card debt (and the cards too-cut up!) and
are working on paying down our home equity. With
the financial decisions that we've made, my wife
has been able to cut her days at work down to
three days a week and spend the other two at
home with our baby girl. It's changed our life.
We are looking forward to this series to remind
us of what we already know and keep us going
down the road to financial freedom.
